What is a tipper truck, and how many tonnes does it carry?

A tipper is a truck with a hydraulically raised load body that tips backwards, or sometimes sideways, to unload loose material such as sand, gravel, aggregate, soil and coal. Body volume is quoted in cubic metres, alongside payload in tonnes.

In India, "tipper" means a road-registered truck with a tipping body. "Dump truck" is usually reserved for off-highway mining haulers, which are far larger and are not registered for public roads.

Most tippers on this list are rated for 4.5 tonnes to 28 tonnes of payload, on 8.7 tonnes to 42 tonnes GVW.
